SusChem Identifies Key Technology Priorities to Address EU and Global Challenges in its New Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

BRUSSELS, 27 November 2019 – Today, the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem) launches its new Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA) at the SusChem Stakeholders 2019 event “Sustainable Chemistry to solve global challenges: the new SusChem Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda”.

The new SusChem SIRA focuses on technology priorities towards 2030, across Advanced MaterialsAdvanced Processes as well as the implementation and co-development of Enabling Digital Technologies. Horizontal topics are equally addressed, including sustainability assessment innovation, safe-by-design for chemicals and materials, as well as building on education and skills capacity in Europe.

The SIRA is the result of a co-creation process together with stakeholders across the innovation ecosystem. It outlines the strategic Research and Innovation (R&I) priorities, with a strong relevance to sustainable chemistry, linking to Horizon Europe and beyond.

“The new SusChem SIRA will further enable and stimulate the chemical sector to find the right answers to the pressing challenges our world is facing as well as satisfy the ambitious political objectives for Europe. And I very much hope that it will result in boosting the competitiveness of our sector at national and EU levels.” said SusChem Chairman Dr. Markus Steilemann.

Realizing the potential described in the new SusChem SIRA would only be possible through the continuous active engagement of stakeholders, from academia, Research & Technology Organisations (RTOs), small and large private companies including leading global chemical companies, and EU policy makers. To effectively address major EU and global challenges, technology will a key driver and the involvement and contribution from stakeholders across value chains and sectors will be critical.
