After 20 years of advancing sustainable chemistry across Europe, the SusChem European Technology Platform (ETP) will formally conclude its activities in 2025.
Since its launch in 2004, SusChem has served as a unique platform fostering collaboration between industry, academia, policy makers, and civil society, helping shape strategic dialogue across national and European ecosystems.
A Legacy of Strategic Impact
SusChem’s legacy includes stakeholder engagement and events, cross-sectoral cooperation, and thematic studies on topics such as Safe and Sustainable-by-Design, digitalisation, advanced materials, and more.
Over the years, SusChem has been instrumental in shaping public-private partnerships (PPPs), including close ties with the Sustainable Process Industry through Resource and Energy Efficiency (SPIRE) PPP, and the Biobased Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU).
SusChem’s input has also directly inspired projects under the EU’s research and innovation programmes. More recently, SusChem supported the IRISS project and the creation of the SSbD Community, enabling a growing network of participants to connect, collaborate, and explore new frameworks for safer, sustainable innovation in chemicals.
These are just a few highlights in a long list of achievements, testament to the enduring value of the SusChem network.
A Strategic Shift strengthening the National Collaboration
In 2024, the SusChem Board worked to define a revised strategy to shape the future direction of SusChem. However, continued operations at the European level could not be secured primarily due to the lack of a long-term funding solution for its activities and channels.
As no alternative funding could be secured, either from other SusChem members or from the European Commission, the SusChem Board, at its meeting on 26 June 2025, decided by majority vote to discontinue the platform’s European-level operations.
While this means the European-level coordination will formally end on 30 September 2025, it also marks a transition to a new way of collaboration.
SusChem-NTPs: The Future of the Network
Under the new format of ‘SusChem-NTPs’, National Technology Platforms will continue their activities, foster collaboration, and sustain the community built over the past two decades.
This transition ensures that national efforts remain aligned and that the community built by SusChem continues to thrive. Coordination structures are currently being developed, and further details will be shared soon.

Thank You from the SusChem Board
The SusChem Board extends its heartfelt thanks to all members, national platforms, and stakeholders for their trust, dedication, and for being part of the SusChem journey over the past 20 years. It remains confident that the principles championed by SusChem will continue to inspire and shape Europe’s transition toward a more sustainable, resilient, and competitive chemical and industrial ecosystem.
Sustainability in chemistry is not just a goal, it remains a shared responsibility and is gradually becoming a common standard in both industry and academia.
