Andrés R. Alcántara studied chemistry and received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Córdoba, Spain, in 1989. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Kent at Canterbury, U.K., he joined the Department of Chemistry in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he is Full Professor in Organic Chemistry and director of the R&D Group of Biotechnology and Applied Materials (TRANSBIOMAT).

Inside SEBiot (Spanish Society of Biotechnology) he has been Coordinator of the Section of Applied Biocatalysis (2004-2007), Member of the Directory Board (2004-2008) and General Secretary (2008-2012). Currently he is Member of the Scientific Committee of ESAB (European Section of Applied Biocatalysis) as well as member of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (groups of Organic Chemistry,and Biological Chemistry), European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) and SusChem-Spain.

Additionally, he is Associate Editor of the Journal “Biocatalysis and Biotransformation”, as well as member of the Editorial Board of the Journals “Current Green Chemistry”, “Catalysts” and “Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Design”.
